Our Reading Public Schools beautiful Book
of the Month for March is “One Plastic Bag.” I was lucky enough to see this
author present during this book tour and got totally hooked on this
story.
This book is a nonfiction story showing how one woman in a
community in Gambia was able to change her life, the life of the women in her
community, and the wider-environment in her area. “One Plastic Bag” is a
beautiful way to touch upon many themes including significant messages about human
impact and responsibility, engineering design/reusing and re-purposing,
economics and women, beautiful art (collage art by an African artist),
interdependence within ecosystems, and more. There are additional
connections across math, science, geography, art, and writing structures – this
book can be celebrated for so many reasons!
